We are currently fundraising for a bakery for the small town of Mulanje. For the past two years CHARM has been fundraising to build and set up a bakery in the village of Thawale, Mulanje.
The idea of the bakery is three fold:
• To create employment for the local community
• To provide freshly baked goods – thus filling a gap in the market
• To generate an income, which can be ploughed back into future businesses.
CHARM was given a piece of land by the chief of Thawale Village when Emily Clarke and Paul Redmond last visited Malawi in 2005. The bakery building was designed by Paul – a Building Surveyor. Two years on the building is finally finished.
Early in 2007, an appeal was put out in the national bakers magazines – Ooh and The British Baker, appealing for Bakers and donations of equipment. We got a fantastic response and have been given several items of bakery equipment. A large number of items came from a company called Norbake. This equipment was shipped out to Malawi in June. We have also recruited 2 bakers and an engineer who are going to fly out to Malawi in September 2007 to set the bakery up. The volunteers, who are flying out at their own expense, will be training up local villagers to run the bakery themselves.
Any profit generated from the bakery will be used to set up additional businesses in the area.
